Life Under New Light

Life Under New Light - xp pen animation contest

This girl can only see life as dull, depressing and colourless. She has lost her creativity and is searching for a change of perspective. Suddenly, one of her old toys, Fenix, comes to life and helps bring back the colour and excitement missing from her life.

This was my first ever short animated story, so I didn't think to make a storyboard, character sheet or take pictures of progress.

The final animation is also on my Youtube channel:

Snow Day!

Snow Day!

The brief was to create a 10 second animation about some event in our childhood. I love snowy weather so I chose to animated the moments in my childhood when I would play in the snow. For this project, I got accustomed to the idea of creating a storyboard and recording a lot of my planning.

Style Frames

One of the first things I did was draw up an idea of the sort of style I was going for with this animation. To the side you can see both my style frame attempts, and at the bottom is a photo I took of the front of my house for reference.

Character Sheet

Here are some of the sketches and notes I made that led up to my final character sheet.

Adidas Ad

Adidas Advert

This is the final major project I did for my last few months of year 12, and it is the biggest animation project I have done so far. The brief was to create a campaign for Adidas that would get young girls engaged in sports; removing the mental or physical barriers that prevent girls staying in sports. My extensive research, planning and production logs can be found on a separate website I made, but below I will share some of the highlights of my process:

Style Frames

I already had a set idea for what I wanted the art style and colours to be like, however I still tried to play around wit different shading and line art styles. I gathered all 3 of my style sheets and put them in a survey for my peers to choose between.

Character Designs

Here are some initial designs for my main character. I utilised the method of making silhouettes of my character first, then generating different outfit designs afterwards. I only did this for the main character, as it was one of the only characters I was creating from scratch, and it was the character that would be on screen the most.

Below you can see the final character sheets I had made for all the important characters.

Storyboard process

Just like I did with the process of creating character sheets, I first started planning my storyboard with rough thumbnail drawings. I did a few of these before gathering feedback on scenes I should change, and then finally I started my final version of my storyboard, and animatic.

Peoples Faces

Peoples Faces

This was a project I completed in early January 2022. The brief was to animate a section of a spoken word poem  that would be given to me. The final product would then be used alongside my peers animation, and would be turned into a 'music video' for the poem.

For this project I followed the same formula as my other school animation project. In addition I researched the creator of the poem, Kae Tempest, so I could match my animation's imagery with their aesthetic.

Style Frames

Part of my task was to research Kae Tempest, the creator of the poem People's Faces. I did this to help me discern the sort of emotions they were trying to convey with their poem. From that research I came up with 2 art styles which I thought would complement the vibe of the poem. I got my peers to choose between the 2 and the votes came very close, with the second style frame being the winner.

I ended up deciding to merge both art styles together, as many people still thought the first style frame was interesting and unique.

Character Sheets

I had made 2 mood boards before hand, of different images to help give me inspiration for the final designs of these 2 character models.

Storyboard process

Just like I did with my FMP, I started my storyboard process by drawing up smaller thumbnail scenes to get an idea of what imagery I want to present in my animation.

I hosted a survey on these 2 designs and use the feedback and advice I had gotten to create a more fleshed out idea. I also managed to use the final version of my storyboard to create an animatic.
