Context & Research

To start off the project,  I made sure I went into what makes a game and the features other popular games have that make the experience of playing it a lot more enjoyable. Some examples are how a game shows clarity of where they’re going and how they’re playing as, how they use the style of the character to set a certain atmosphere and target audience, and how game developers use placement of details in the world to draw the players attention to certain areas.

One of the things I researched was how a game objective effects the game and how it’s played. Without a mission to complete, the game can become boring and unfulfilling.

Initial idea

After looking into  what makes a video game good, and the different features/components that are needed, I started to brainstorm my own game idea with these things in mind. I focused on the story, aesthetic and game play, in terms of the genre,  first.

I had come up with 3 different ideas, giving each its own description and mood board with detailed explanations on each decision. With each idea came more research; I feel as though I was doing little bits of  research throughout my entire project. I referenced other video games that inspired me and that had the same sort of idea behind it.

In the end I decided to stick with my first idea and began to develop it further.

Final Research

&

Planning

When I had picked my game idea, I then went into depth  about specific areas of my game; planning it out as if it were real and was going to be  distributed. Things like Target Audience, Packaging, Covers and character backstory wasn't left out.

Another thing I researched was about Inclusivity In Video Games; I wanted to create a game that had a lot of black-women inclusivity, for there had seemed to be a lack there of in the past up to the present. Because of this I came up with the story of a chemical catastrophy wiping out all the non-black people and men in the world. This idea proved to be both controversial and compelling for a video game, which was the theme I was going for; "a game that would get the most reaction out of social media".

Needless to say, after carefully planning out the scenery, art style, and character style, I could finally begin my production log.

Production Log

In my Production Log, you can see my gradual process throughout each element of my project. I first work on napkin sketches of my designs; whether it be the background or drawing a character, I need to draw many different variants before I choose a final design. Then I pick one sketch I like and build upon it; thinking of things I can add, and then cleaning up the sketch. And finally, I start the final drawing that I'll be using in my freeze frames and /or poster.

My Production Log also includes a little bit of research; photo references that I used to further develop an idea I had.

Evaluation

The final thing I did for this project was an Evaluation on all the work I had done. This included my honest thoughts about my work and my final product.
